Saint Patrick's Day in Savannah (Part 1)

For those who don't already know, St. Patrick's Day is huge in Savannah! Over 400,000 visitors flood the streets of Savannah to eat, drink (sometimes too much) and be merry! Well I braved the crowds this year to get all the pictures of everything you missed.

A wee lass and her da.

A young couple decked out in traditional greens.

Some dapper Irish gents.

A pair of dolled up Irish lassies.

These folks had their Shillelaghs ready!

That's all for now, I've got plenty of pictures to sift through so keep checking back!

Girl Scout season has begun!

For those who don't already know, Savannah is definitely the Girl Scout capital of the world! The founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low, was born and raised in Savannah. In fact, the first Girl Scout meeting ever was held on March 12, 1912 right here in Savannah! Well now whenever the air changes from cool to warm the Scouts start to show up in droves.

This brings me to the topic, Savannah Cooks! first girl scout cooking class of the year! The Troop made their way down from Smithfield NC and made us a priority stop. Plus, I'm sure the Scout leaders liked that they could knock out both a meal and an activity at the same time. They chose our delicious Cooking Woks! (Chinese) menu. With temping treats from the far east it was hard to sit in the office once that smell started to fill the air. So I didn't, I took some pictures!

Chef Bryan Beacham teaches the Scouts an egg roll wrapping technique.

Yum, Chinese Almond Cookies!

Owner Nicki Curreri shares her expertise with the Girls.

Finally, time to eat!

Lucky for me they had some leftovers!

An Elegant Presentation

Just found this pic from Chef Bryan Beacham's "Aphrodisiac Overload" class on Valentines day and it's too beautiful not to share.

And there are still some openings in tomorrow nights "Konichiwa Y'all!" class!

The Gentlemen of Kitchens on the Square

Hey everybody! I just wanted to take a minute to introduce a few of my favorite guys (with the exception of my boys): Brendan, Bryan, and Derek, the men of Kitchens on the Square.

First up we have Brendan, our eCommerce Manager. Brendan is always around to provide exceptional customer service to our customers that decide to visit our store online or by phone. Did you know that we have approximately 3500 different items in our store? Well, Brendan does and he can tell you about every single one of them.

Brendan

Next up is Bryan, our resident Chef. Bryan is always sure to entertain with his quick wits and culinary expertise. Whether it’s teaching one of our many cooking classes, or doing demos throughout the day he tries to spend as much time in the kitchen as possible. When he’s not in the kitchen you can find him floating around the sales floor helping customers find the items they need to create their own fabulous gourmet meals at home.

Bryan

And last but certainly not least is Derek, our Sales Lead. You’ll always find this cheerful chap ready to assist you with all of your kitchen needs. Having lived in Savannah for the past four years, he is always quick to let you know where the locals like to eat.

Derek

Ellis Square Update

Just a quick update on the Ellis Square Project. We've got a brand new sidewalk! And it's nice and wide too! Here's a pic.

You'll remember the old pic
Plus I think my panorama Photoshop skills have grown since last time. ;)

Lowcountry Lunch

Quick Post: Bryan's Lowcountry Lunch today looked soooooo good I couldn't resist clicking a few quick pics.

Tybee Island Crab Cakes! Yum!

Georgia Peach Cobbler

Savannah Red Rice

The smell of the crab cakes always makes me wander from the back office to see if he has any extra for me (he never does, so sad).

Quick Hot Chocolate Recipe

Quick Hot Chocolate Recipe

3-4 Cups Milk
2 Cups Chocolate Chips
2 Tbsp Traditional Mexican Vanilla (or to taste)

Warm Milk on Medium Low, stirring frequently to prevent burning. When hot add Chocolate Chips stirring continuously until dissolved. Add Mexican Vanilla, stir, and serve immediately or place in thermos for those cold winter outings.

You'll notice Byran used the Dosatore Measuring Jug to measure the chocolate chips. It's great for when you need to add a lot of a certain ingredient all at once. Also, this is the mug that is Bryan's favorite.

Welcome to Kitchens on the Square Ya'll Part 1

Hey Y'all! As this is Savannah Cooks! first blog post I thought we should do a little introduction to the store and all the great people who work here. So jumpin' right in we have...

The store front!
We're right around the corner from Paula Deen's Restaurant, The Lady and Sons, and let me tell ya, it's a great location to have a kitchen store! Paula has been known to stop in and do some shopping from time to time so next time you're here keep an eye out! We are located right off historic Ellis Square which is currently undergoing a major face lift...

Ellis Square
But soon enough it will be beautiful again, so keep checking back, I'll be sure to provide updates as they come.
We are also right across the street from the much loved local bakery The Express Cafe

But enough about our surroundings, let's have a little bit more about the great people who work here. First and foremost, the owner, Nicki Curreri (I know who signs the paychecks!)

Nicki
You will probably not see her out of her office much, she always has her nose to the grindstone, paying bills, filling orders and generally keeping this place running at a breakneck pace(you can take the girl out of New York, but you can't take New York out of the girl). But if you need to find a certain product she's the one to talk to. If she can't find it, it doesn't exist! Up next we have the engine behind all of the displays on the floor as well as one heck of a Store Manager, Nicole Carrillo.

Nicole
Doesn't she make the lane next to the shop look so much better? If you hear someone in the store getting excited over new merchandise you can bet that it's Nicole (more on that in future posts). A transplant from sunny San Diego, California, we'll make a southerner out of her yet! Up next is Violet Armstrong. If you ever need an expert on how grandma used to cook, Vi (her much used nickname) has plenty to say on the subject.(not to mention knitting, don't get her started!)

Vi
Finally (for this post at least, there's more of us) there's Sarah Martin. She's a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design and you'll usually find her here on weekends picking up a few hours in her spare time (students don't get much!)

Sarah (she makes it look so easy)
Well, like I said, I don't want to ramble on, so keep checking back for some cooking tips from Resident Chef Bryan Beacham (you'll get more info on him next time) as well as updates on the frantic fun that is Kitchens on the Square!
And don't forget to check the online schedule of upcoming cooking classes!
